The Yoga Process / Aims of Yoga

The simple practices of posture work, breathing and relaxation / meditation, work progressively on a subtle level, to bring a deeper understanding of the self and a sense of calm, as well as increased suppleness, stamina, balance and wellbeing.  My aim is to enable you to incorporate new ways of being into your daily life to achieve reduced levels of stress in the face of difficulties.  Stress happens…. it’s what we do with it that shapes our perception of life.

My classes

If you are searching for yoga classes in Gloucestershire I have the classes for you.  Whether you are a beginner or have been practising yoga for years, my classes will suit you.  With my qualification from the British Wheel of Yoga you can be certain that I have the skills and experience to enable you to practice yoga in a safe and secure environment.

What Kind of Yoga?

I teach Hatha Yoga, which is the main form of yoga, from which many other types of yoga have sprung.  Hatha means Sun/Moon.  The meaning of this is to bring both opposing sides of our natures into balance, the sun being active and the moon, passive.  Hatha Yoga combines active and stronger work with passive, more gentle stretches.  This combination promotes strength at the same time as flexibility. Too much development of strength could make you more rigid and over emphasis on suppleness could make you weak.  This applies to the whole body/mind/spirit, as when you do work on one aspect of yourself it affects all other aspects too.

Besides the posture work that people associate with yoga, we also work on breathing awareness, including development of better breathing practices.  We also spend some time every session in relaxation or meditation to absorb the benefits from the session and to relax the mind thoroughly and de-stress.  Many people like this bit the best!

More information about my classes

Don’t worry if you don’t seem to fit the profile of the average yoga student; we’re not all young, slim and super fit!

Most of my students come to keep themselves from becoming any stiffer in their bodies, or because they have a problem, perhaps with their back or knees, or because they are stressed  and need to take their minds off their problems.

Yoga suits all types and you only need to do what suits you at that particular time. As time goes on, if you keep coming, you will find that you can do so much more than when you started. You take these benefits into your daily life, where you find that movement is easier, you feel more relaxed and stressors in your life affect you less. Sounds wonderful or too good to be true?

I teach Hatha Yoga but different teachers have different styles, even in Hatha.  There are many other styles and names of yoga, some more meditative, some more movement based.  You may find after a while that you want to change to a different style but you are best to start with a more gentle type of yoga, like Hatha and learn the postures in the correct way before going on to a movement based type of yoga, like Ashtanga.

My classes are gentle, good for beginner and intermediate level.  You will learn the postures in a graduated way and when, or if, you feel you want to move on, you will have a good basis from which to do this.

The class starts with warm ups, then we do postures and stretching, finishing with a balance, maybe some breathing and relaxation for about 10 minutes.  Most people really enjoy this bit.

We work in comfortable clothes that you can move in easily and bare feet, to get a grip on the mat, when doing wider legged postures.  You need a proper yoga 'sticky' mat to work on but I usually have a spare that you can use until you decide to get your own.  The only other thing to bring is a light blanket to cover up when we do the relaxation at the end.
